More about the ingredients
Along with copal and kandea, this is one of the emblematic ingredients of South American incense. Its fragrance is at once resinous, woody, floral and fruity. Its fragrance is concentrated in its wood and branches and is not expressed in the form of resin, like frankincense. Its use for spiritual purposes dates back to the Incas. Palo Santo belongs to the same botanical family as myrrh and frankincense, the Burseraceae. It grows in the arid tropical forests of northern Peru and Ecuador. Its fragrance, as well as its physical and medicinal properties, make it a choice raw material for sculpted religious objects. Please note: Palo Santo (Sacred Wood) is a Spanish name that also designates other tree species, including Bulnesia Sarmientoi, which is found in northern Argentina, Paraguay and the Amazon and is a protected species.
Use with sand.
Directions for use
Stick the stick into a perfume burner filled with sand or ashes. The Palo Santo stick is not burnt in one go: you need to let the flame develop for 30 seconds to a minute, then shake the stick to extinguish the flame and activate the embers. You'll need to relight it 1 or 2 times, for a burn time of 3 to 6 minutes, to obtain a sufficiently powerful fragrance that lasts in the room. A stick can therefore be used around thirty times.
This incense comes from trees and branches that have fallen to the ground. The scent of the wood matures under these conditions, and there is no ecological pressure on the natural resource.
