The Vijnânabhaïrava, written at the beginning of our era in the Shiva school of Kashmir, presents the "quintessence of all Tantras". It is immediately situated on the plane of absolute reality and touches the deepest roots of the mind. This "Tantra of Supreme Knowledge", which enables one to "look at Brahman with open eyes", is probably the most extraordinary sum of yogic means ever assembled. It exposes a yoga that uses the full spectrum of thoughts, emotions and sensations as a mystical path. Through the depth of its presence in the phenomenal world, the Tantrika touches the absolute. It is above all a yoga of action in the world of the senses.
The yogin discovers a boundless freedom and sees the divine as his or her own Self, free from all conceptual limitations, dogmas and beliefs. The "supreme knowledge" of which the Vijnânabhaïrava deals is that which enables the yogin to recognise his own nature as Being, consciousness, bliss.
