Born in Calcutta, Swâmi Vivekânanda (1863-1902) was fascinated in his youth by Western modernity. His meeting with the great mystic Ramakrishna changed the course of his life. He became his main disciple and after the death of the master, he renounced the world to travel around India as a wandering hermit. His participation in the first World Congress of Religions was the beginning of an intense missionary activity that introduced Vedantic philosophy to America. In this reference work, he describes and analyses three major forms of yoga: Karma-Yoga, or "yoga of selfless action", the most widespread in the West; Bhakti-Yoga, or "yoga of devotion" to a deity, which is particularly popular in India; and Raja-Yoga, "the king of yogas", a total ascetic discipline that only a few initiates can master safely.
